From a Tier-3 College to a Product Company

Team prephasz· 15 Jul 2026· 1 min read

Your college tier does not decide your ceiling. A practical playbook for freshers who want to skip the service-company queue and target product roles.

Every year, students from unknown colleges land roles at strong product companies — and every year, others with identical potential never try because they assume the door is closed. It is not. It is just a different door.

Why the tier matters less than you think

Product companies filter on demonstrated skill, not campus brand. An online assessment does not know your college's ranking. What it measures is whether you can solve the problem.

The playbook

  1. Go deep on DSA. Beyond the service-company patterns, practise medium-difficulty problems until they feel routine.
  2. Build one real project you can explain end to end — design decisions, trade-offs, what broke.
  3. Master core CSOS, DBMS, and networks are interview staples.
  4. Apply widely and off-campus. Referrals and careers pages, not just campus drives.

The mindset

Rejections are data, not verdicts. Log what each assessment tested, close that gap, and try again. The students who break through are rarely the most talented — they are the most consistent. Track your readiness, keep closing gaps, and the tier stops being the story.
